I just finished watching the animated series today and have to say it’s better than I thought it would be.
As with all Star Trek, the stories are the heart of the matter, not the format.
Some of the stories I found were thought-provoking in line with the live-action series. I wish the show had more than two seasons, but there’s a lot packed into the seasons this show had. Toward the end, a holodeck-like rec room is shown where Sulu creates an environment for Uhura, Bones, and himself to explore. In another episode, Spock’s vegetarianism is established too and used to good effect in The Slaver Weapon episode.
I recommend checking it out if you haven’t before or recently.
